Appaloosa Grill a.k.a “The Horse” is an American/World traditional restaurant and live music venue on the 16th Street Mall in the downtown Denver business district. The Horse was originally the vision of the current Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and was established in April 2001. In July 2005, Oakhurst band members/employees Johnny James Qualley & Adam Hill purchased the restaurant and have since sold interest to other employees; Mark Kline (Bar Manager), Matte Copeland (AGM), Guy Faulkner (Talent Buyer) and Tracy Gonzales (Controller).
Appaloosa Grill is proud to serve fresh, high quality all natural proteins and uses organic produce when and wherever possible. Everything is made from scratch, right down to the ketchup! Chef Sean Boutot has created a menu that features a wide variety of comfort foods as well as a large selection of vegetarian, gluten free and vegan options. The Grill boasts two happy hours daily and the kitchen is open until 1:30am nightly.
As Denver continues to grow so does The Horse! In 2007 the restaurant underwent a $750K renovation and expansion which provided additional dining area and major upgrades to the stage, lights and sound system which dramatically improved the free nightly talent offerings. The renovations were essential to The Horse becoming what it is today including the ability to draw in more national bands and musicians as well as a space to host large, private parties.
Appaloosa Grill is available for you 365 days a year and is conveniently located along Denver’s free Mall shuttle service which serves as the “backbone” of downtown Denver. The following landmarks are located within three blocks or less from the corner of 16th Street and Welton; Colorado Convention Center, Denver Performing Arts Complex, Denver Pavilions, Paramount Theater, Light Rail and 14 downtown hotels.

“The bands performing at Appaloosa are working musicians, guys and gals who’ve paid their dues and can play a three- or four- hour set – reading the crowd, knowing when to break out a cover, where to squeeze in that edgy new original, when to kick it up a notch and when to slow it down.” -The Rocky Mountain News by: Dave Flomberg, Originally published 11/30/07
“It’s hip enough to be hip without making the tragically unhip feel completely unwelcome.” - The Rocky Mountain News by: Dave Flomberg, Originally published 11/30/07
“Today Appaloosa is best known as a venue for live music, which can be heard here every single night of the year except Christmas Eve.” - 10/4/12, Westword
“Appaloosa was one of the last businesses that John Hickenlooper, today the governor of Colorado, opened while he was still running the Wynkoop Brewing Company. And both Hickenlooper and Qualley saw that this area — and, by extension, the entire city of Denver — was heading into a period of major growth and development. "I was able to see very clearly why Wynkoop and John would have selected this location," says Qualley.” - 10/4/12, Westword
"We fill a very unique niche that's really geared toward the musician. We're not trying to get crazy ticket sales; we're not putting five bands a night on," he says. Instead, Appaloosa has a solid roster of more than sixty bands that rotate through. "We just have a core value that local musicians that are really good have a shot at playing here." - 10/4/12, Westword
